Orange City Shuffleboard Courts

There’s a really good article in the Daytona Beach News Journal, September 4! It would be really sad to see them paved over.

The courts, built in 1944, along with the city’s original town hall, which was constructed in 1918, could be on the chopping block as Orange City explores the idea of adding more municipal parking to alleviate what some officials see as a shortage in town.

The site has historically served as a social gathering place and recreational facility benefiting all Orange City residents and enriching the district’s heritage, as it tells so many of the community’s stories.” NOT ONLY ORANGE CITY BUT THE NORTHERN DISTRICT. According to the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation: “Built in 1918, the building functioned as Orange City’s inaugural Town Hall, coinciding with the town’s first municipal votes by women. WE NEED TO PRESERVE OUR HISTORY.

Arthur “AJ” Jordan puts a shuffleboard disc into play while his opponent, Ed Schwartz, plans his next move during a recent weekly gathering of the Clermont Shuffleboard Club at Kehlor Park Recreation Center in downtown Clermont. The Clermont Shuffleboard Club has attendance records that trace to 1933. Jordan, who serves as the club president, says he enjoys the competitive nature of the game and that “it’s just fun.” The group gathers biweekly on Tuesday and Friday, and plays in tournaments with other clubs around the area starting in October. “Cold or hot, it doesn’t matter; we’re here playing,” said Jordan, who extended an open invitation to anyone interested in playing the game to come out to try it with them.
